Goma is 35 years old with 4 young kids studying at Maya Universe Academy. Her first husband went to India for the year and never returned, not hearing any news from him. She lived in her in-laws village 6 hours away from her family home. She then decided to buy a small land near her maternal family and is married again and is starting to settle. She likes to work with the bracelets as she learns new ideas and how to become self-dependent. She aims to make her family stable and her main goal in life is to uplift her children’s education.
Manu is 30 years old raising her young child, attending Maya Universe Academy, by herself; her husband works in Dubai. She lives 20 minutes away from the main school campus and workshop at Maya. Before joining the bracelet team, Manu was a house-wife. As a parent of a Maya student, she was given the opportunity to earn her own income by joining the team. On her off days and free time, she is working in her fields and looking after her cattle amongst other household chores. She recently received homestay training and is keen on opening her own home-stay whilst continuing the bracelet work from home or the workshop.
Sangita is from Chirkan, a place in between Bandipur and Keshabtar. She travelled to Chisapani to give her children a better education at Maya Universe Academy. She started out as a labour worker in the school and then was given the opportunity to work with handicrafts as part of Maya’s efforts in establishing micro social enterprises. She is happy to work with bracelets. Now 35 years old, Sangita is happy to go to work to spend time with her friends whilst earning her own income, which helps to support her family. She is keen to continue learning and get more ideas so that she can continue such type of handicraft work from home.
Each Beach Bracelet resonates with the long summer sandy beach days with its ivory threads holding the blue stones and clear rock crystals. It is adorned with the Maya emblem, which translates to love in Nepalese.
Each Beach is soft and dreamy yet very well suited on the beach and sun-loving men. Each Beach bracelet is adjustable (free size) and comes with a story card and cotton pouch. Lapis lazuli is a well-cherished gemstone. It is believed to bring about wisdom and a good fortune to bearers. Clear Quartz is known as the "master healer" and will amplify energy and thought, as well as the effect of other crystals. It absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy. The bracelet is adorned with a handmade silver 'Maya emblem'; 'Maya' translates to love.
Crafts by Maya Universe is a social enterprise employing a small team of women from Tanahun district who produce, by hand, bracelets and other jewellery made from semi-precious stones.
Each stone is carved by hand. The profits go to Maya Universe Academy, Nepal's first chain of free private schools focusing on rural and poor communities where parents of students enrolled can pay in time instead of money. The mission of Maya Universe Academy is to increase access to quality education in rural areas. The small chain currently educates 600 students in Tanahun and Udaypur district.
