About Chhwali Art & Craft

'Chhwali' is a Nepali word for Straw, it is the dried stem of wheat. Once the farmers have harvested wheat, they will dry the stems and it will be used for thatching roofs. Chhwali artists have been utilizing it for various arts and crafts, which helps to prevent it from going to waste. The colour of dried stems is light golden with shimmering so the arts and crafts made from Chwali look as if it has been coated with glossy paper.

Chhwali painting is a craft made by shaping straw into the patterns and representational images. Wheat-straw is used in this specific art of weaving straw into pictures by combining with nature. Chhwali craft in Nepal is a unique approach to transform crafts at a new level. Most of the straw artist used the method of cutting straw and finishing the design. His approach to this craft, on the other hand, is focused on painting the straw itself and giving the design.
