Crafts By Maya Universe

Crafts by Maya Universe is a social enterprise employing a small team of women from Tanahun district who produce, by hand, bracelets and other jewellery made from semi-precious stones.

Each stone is carved by hand. The profits go to Maya Universe Academy, Nepal's first chain of free private schools focusing on rural and poor communities where parents of students enrolled can pay in time instead of money. The mission of Maya Universe Academy is to increase access to quality education in rural areas. The small chain currently educates 600 students in Tanahun and Udaypur district.

In response to the recent earthquake in Nepal in 2015, SAATH has started a livelihood and entrepreneurship program.

The program enrolls girls who have been affected by the earthquake. We provide employment opportunity to them to make them more independent as well as secure their livelihood. We have been providing them a platform to enhance their tailoring skills. The produced goods will be sold at local and international market to raise fund to support the education of children who have been affected by the earthquake.

Women in Nepal have a special relationship with their ‘saari’, which can be compared to a ball gown. Most women own several of these and every single one reflects a special memory.

The saari is often only used once, for one event and after they are hung up and displaced in wardrobe, never to be used again.

We think this is a real shame, that something so beautiful and special is no longer able to be enjoyed by other people and is almost forgotten. We want in some way, to preserve these memories and special dresses, by creating something new and useful from them.

With the help of women in marginalized communities, without education and profession, we recycle donated saari’s into beautiful kimonos, bowties, neckties, dresses. These beautiful fabrics and memories will be interwoven and shown in a new life. Our vision is to create work opportunities for these women with an end result of a product they will feel proud of creating.

THAT IS WHY THIS IS MUCH MORE THAN ONLY A PRODUCT
